Computer Science Workshops for Grades 2-12
March 16, 23 and 30, 2019

The workshops are a Computer Science Department/College of Health, Environment and Science at SRU to introduce kids to computer programming. Depending on the grade level, students will learn computer programming, robotics, computer visualization and programming computer hardware. All workshops will be offered in the Advance Technology and Science (ATS) building.​

Registration Deadline: TBD
(Max 20 seats per class and registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis)

​Cost: $50 for one class, $75 for two or more classes or one or more siblings.

A limited number of seats are available for those unable to pay for the workshop. Please submit the registration with a reason in the Note area and we will consider it on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will contact you to confirm if there are seats available.

Scratch/MakeBlock Robot Programming

Grades: 2-3
March 16, 23, 30th
9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Room #: ATS 224

Scratch is a free programming language , specifically designed for children, for creating your own interactive stories, games, and animations. Students will work on creating a game using Scratch. In addition they will be programming the Makeblock robot using the Scratch programming environment with LED, Sonar, Light and other sensors.

Scratch is a free programming language , specifically designed for children, for creating your own interactive stories, games, and ani-mations. Students will work on creating a game using Scratch. Two to three hours will be dedicated to pro-gramming the Makeblock robot using LED, Sonar, Light, temperature, Matrix and other sensors.


HTML/Javascript Programming

Grades: 6-12

Have you ever wanted to learn to create a web site? Start by learning the basics of HTML and JavaScript. HTML is the publishing language of the web. Utilizing HTML tags, you can create a web page that can be displayed in any browser across the web. JavaScript is a programming language designed for performing dynamic tasks within a Web page. It is a pretty easy computer language once you get the hang of it! The HTML/ JavaScript workshop assumes that you have absolutely no previous knowledge of HTML or JavaScript.


3D Modeling Using SketchUp

Grades: 4-8
March 16, 23, 30th
1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

SketchUp is a free 3D modeling software for drawing, designing, and rendering 3D objects. SketchUp offers a user-friendly interface to create interior design and architectural models by drawing lines and shapes, push and pull surfaces to turn an idea on paper into 3D printable model. Through a hands-on environment, students will learn the fundamentals of 3D modeling, and how to use SketchUp to create a simple 3D house in a web browser. Students will be also guided to create their own 3D models they like.


Arduino and Electronics

Grades: 6-12
March 16, 23, 30th

Arduino is an open-source credit card-sized microcontroller system (small credit-card sized computer) to promote the study of hardware and software. Students will learn how to write programs for Arduino, with projects of LED control, temperature/humidity measurement, and distance detection.

The workshops are partially funded by Dr. Jerry Chmielewski, Dean, College of  Health, Environment and Science, Computer Science Department,  Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Retired Faculties and  an anonymous donor.
 
** All funds from registration will be used towards purchasing materials required for the workshops, covering registration costs of students who cannot afford to pay for the workshops and for funding charitable causes such as school lunch programs for  Slippery Rock School District. All instructors are conducting workshops on a volunteer basis to enhance the computer skills of our kids.
